All six touchdowns for De La Salle in its 42-7 North Coast Section Open Division win over Freedom.
Perennial national power
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) claimed its 25th consecutive North Coast Section championship Friday with a 42-7 Open Division title victory over previously unbeaten
Freedom (Oakley, Calif.) at Dublin High School.
The Spartans (11-1) will now wait for the California Interscholastic Federation commissioners to decide whether they will advance directly to the Open Bowl championship against the Southern California representative or advance to the Northern California Division I regional.
De La Salle extended its unbeaten streak against Northern California opponents to 281 games. Its last defeat was in a 1991 NCS title game to Pittsburg 35-27 at the Oakland Coliseum.
Freedom entered with an 11-0 record, its first 11-win season in school history. If De La Salle is selected as the Northern California Open representative, the Falcons will advance to the Division I regional. If some other team than De La Salle is selected, Freedom's season is over.
Jonathan Hackett scored two first-half touchdowns on runs of 24 and 3 yards,
Kairee Robinson
added a 31-yard score and quarterback
Abel Ordaz finished off a long
drive with a 1-yard TD plunge as the Spartans jumped to a 28-7 halftime
lead and never looked back.
They looked very much like the dominating team they've been the last quarter-century, holding a 268-87 lead in yards at halftime. Hackett and Robinson were both over 100 yards. A 49-yard touchdown bomb from
Jonathan Pierce to
Baylei Coston accounted for Freedom's only score of the first half, tying the game at 7-7.
Ronnie Rivers, the son of former NFL running back Ron Rivers, entered the game with 2,134 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns for Freedom. De La Salle junior running back Robinson entered with 1,670 yards and 22 scores. Freedom had lost its last five meetings with De La Salle tracing back to 2004 by an average margin of 66 points.
