Buena Vista's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Hudson Wingo, who threw for 115 yards and three touchdowns on only ten passes, and also punched in one TD on the ground. What's more, Wingo racked up 18 rushing yards, the most he's had since back in September of 2024. Eli Schuknecht was another key back, rushing for 98 yards and a pair of scores on only seven carries.
Buena Vista was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 274 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Steamboat Springs only rushed for 95.
Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 12 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Caleb Pierce, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Rye won against Peyton last Friday with 14 points and they decided to stick to that point total again on Friday. The Thunderbolts came out on top in a nail-biter against Ellicott, sneaking past 14-12. The Thunderbolts haven't had any issues with the Thunderhawks recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.
Rye found their leader in freshman Brady Baumgartner, who rushed for 37 yards and a pair of TDs, and also threw for 121 yards on six of 17 attempts. Jackson Bjorum helped out on the ground, rushing for 90 yards.
Buena Vista's record is now 6-0. As for Rye, their record now sits at 6-1.
Friday's contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Schuknecht and Bjorum. Schuknecht just won't slow down this season and has run in 6 touchdowns while averaging 76.7 rushing yards per game. Bjorum has been a dominant force too and has averaged 111 rushing yards per game.
Everything came up roses for Buena Vista against Rye in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as the squad secured a 35-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Demons since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
