High school football rankings: Who took over the No. 1 spot in the MaxPreps Top 25 following Mater Dei loss?

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) is the new No. 1 team in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings after Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) fell 43-36 against Centennial (Corona, Calif.). 

Bosco (4-0) is coming off a 42-0 win over Serra (San Mateo, Calif.). The Braves have outscored opponents 160-21, including a 21-14 victory over No. 3 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) two weeks ago. They close out non-league action Friday against Saint Louis (Honolulu, Hawaii). 

Centennial is the biggest mover in this week's MaxPreps Top 25, jumping 14 spots to No. 7 after taking down Mater Dei. See the recap of Friday's instant classic here. Mater Dei fell from No. 1 to No. 8 and has a huge game Friday at No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) in the MaxPreps Game of the Week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT and the showdown will be streamed free on MaxPreps, the NFHS Network and the MaxPreps YouTube channel.

Bishop Gorman (4-0) stayed unbeaten with a 35-10 win against East St. Louis (Ill.). The Las Vegas power has outscored its first four opponents 160-24. This will be the fifth meeting against Mater Dei and the Gaels would love to get on the board with a win after losing the first four.

Mission Viejo (Calif.) climbed again this week to No. 6 after a 34-24 comeback win against Lincoln (San Diego). The Diablos have had a tough non-league schedule with notable wins over No. 9 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) and Folsom. They make the 2,000-plus mile trip to Tennessee to face McCallie (Chattanooga, Tenn.) on Friday.

Basha (Chandler, Ariz.) was the only new team to join the rankings. The Bears improved to 3-0 with a 42-14 win over Williams Field (Gilbert). Basha's biggest victory came two weeks ago with a 30-24 win against Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.).
