Baseball Game Preview: Newark Memorial Cougars vs. Moreau Catholic Mariners

For the second straight game, Newark Memorial will face off against Moreau Catholic. Newark Memorial will be playing at home against Moreau Catholic at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Newark Memorial will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.

Newark Memorial proved they can win big on Thursday (they won by 19) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Moreau Catholic 4-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Cougars have posted since April 18, 2024.

Connor Murphy was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024.

Murphy wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Anthony Medrano, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Fabian Guzman also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Newark Memorial's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. As for Moreau Catholic, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 3-4.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Newark Memorial has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Moreau Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.7 strikeouts.
