The Santa Ynez Pirates lost against the Bishop Diego Cardinals back in December of 2022, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. Santa Ynez fell to Bishop Diego 39-33. While losing is never fun, Santa Ynez can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 332nd, while Bishop Diego is ranked 162nd).
Santa Ynez's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Helina Pecile, who dropped a double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Kayla Morrell who scored 6 points along with 10 rebounds. Pecile scored a full 30.3% of Santa Ynez's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Galilea De la cruz was her usual excellent self, scoring 16 points for Bishop Diego. The contest was De la cruz's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Jaymi Coronado was another key contributor, scoring 7 points.
Santa Ynez's loss dropped their record down to 6-3. As for Bishop Diego, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 11-0.
Santa Ynez will head out on the road to face off against St. Joseph at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in St. Joseph's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season. As for Bishop Diego, they will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Newbury Park at 4:00 p.m. The pair have allowed few points on average, (Newbury Park: 29.5, Bishop Diego: 27.8) so any points scored will be well earned.
