Video: Top 25 national high school baseball rankings Texas' Argyle lands at No. 1 after going 71-1-1 over past two years.
For the past four seasons, Fremont Christian has posted the four of the best seasons in school history, topped this year by the school's first ever North Coast Section title. Leading the way has been a stat sheet monster in pitcher/shortstop Bubba Gomez.
Selected to the All-Bay Area team by the Bay Area News Group and the All-Metro team by the San Francisco Chronicle, despite playing on one of the smallest schools in Division 5, Gomez was one of the leading strikeout pitchers in the state and also one of the top hitters.
Gomez finished second in the state with 153 strikeouts and his 569 career strikeouts ranked fifth all-time in state history, according to Cal-HI Sports. He also ranks seventh in career wins with 39 (39-11) and his 10 career no-hitters would be a state record.
As a hitter, Gomez batted .478 as a senior with 46 runs, 37 RBI, 12 doubles, four triples and five home runs. His career stats include a batting average of .529, 185 runs, 203 RBI, 47 doubles, 16 triples and 15 home runs. His career RBI total ranks No. 2 in state history, while his 185 runs ranks No. 4.
Fremont Christian was 24-6 this year, believed to be the best record in school history, and defeated Berean Christian, the section tournament's No. 1 seed, 5-3 in the championship game. Fremont Christian was 87-23 in Gomez's four seasons on the varsity.
Gomez will also reportedly attend Alabama A&M next season.
For his achievements as an individual player and team leader, Gomez has been selected as the MaxPreps Small Schools Player of the Year.
Andrew Clark of Xavier Prep (Palm Desert) earns the MaxPreps small schools Coach of the Year honors. Playing in a league that features schools with nearly four times its own enrollment, Xavier Prep still managed to finish in third place in the Desert Empire League. However Clark's team still had a losing record at 11-13 when it entered the Southern Section Division 5 playoffs.
However Clark's team caught fire in the postseason, winning four of its five playoff games by shutout, including 3-0 over Polytechnic (Pasadena) in the championship game. Xavier Prep finished 16-13 for the best record in school history and the school's first baseball section championship.
The MaxPreps Small Schools All-State teams consist of players who compete on teams that play in state playoff divisions that generally include schools with less than 1,000 students. Players from schools with an enrollment greater than 1,000 students, yet played in the lower playoff divisions, were not considered for the small schools team.
