Edwards County and Newton are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Lions will square off against the Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Edwards County 3.1, Newton 3.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Edwards County came out on top against Flora on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run fifth inning. The Lions walked away with a 14-9 win over the Wolves. The victory continues a trend for the Lions in their matchups with the Wolves: they've now won four in a row.
Drew Roosevelt was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Roosevelt was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Jax Duncan was excellent, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs, one double, and one RBI. Owen Lynch also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Edwards County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. They are a perfect 12-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Casey-Westfield typically has all the answers at home, but on Monday Newton proved too difficult a challenge. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Warriors a 3-0 shutout.
The result came thanks to Carson Barthelme's shutout, as he gave up just five hits and racked up six Ks. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Gavin Meinhart, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
Edwards County's record is now 16-6. As for Newton, their record now sits at 21-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Edwards County has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Newton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Edwards County was able to grind out a solid win over Newton in their previous matchup back in May of 2025, winning 5-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
