Top single game high school girls basketball point totals since 1923

The leading scorer in the country this year at 37 points per game, McPherson scored 63 points in a game against Stephens County. Last year as a sophomore, McPherson did one better, scoring 64 points in a win over Hart County.

Beginning with McPherson's efforts the past two years, we tracked the highest single game scoring total in every season since 1923 below. The list would not be possible without the research of Paul Luchter and his website luckyshow.org. The site is a wealth of information about high school, college, semi-pro and professional sports.

Girls basketball has a different history than the boys game in that it was a six-player game for most of its history until the mid-1970s when it switched over to a five-player game. Some pockets of the country continued to use the six-player format until the early 1990s. In the six-player format, players were restricted to certain parts of the court. Additionally, players were not allowed to block shots. As a result, individual players were able to run up huge point totals on a regular basis. It wasn't uncommon for the top scorers to average over 50 points per game.

For this list, MaxPreps presents the top single-game total for each season. From 1973 to 1993, we provide the top five-player single-game score and the top six-player single-game score since both games were being played during this stretch.

63 — Kayla McPherson, Madison County (Danielsville, Ga.)
In an 81-79 loss to Stephens County, McPherson made 25-of-53 field goals, seven 3-pointers and six free throws. McPherson finished the season as the leading scorer in the nation with 36.3 points per game.

2019
64 — Kayla McPherson, Madison County (Danielsville, Ga.)
McPherson set a career high in a 93-68 win over Hart County with 11 3-pointers.

2018
76 — Shyla LaTone, Bonita Vista (Chula Vista, Calif.)
LaTone made 10 3-pointers out of 30 field goals made in a 99-26 win over Hilltop.

2017
68 — Destiny Littleton, Bishop's (La Jolla, Calif.)
The state's all-time scoring leader made 24 field goals, six 3-pointers and all 14 free throws in a 112-44 win over Mira Mesa. Over the course of four games, Littleton had 219 points.

2016
72 — Kysre Gondrezick, Benton Harbor (Mich.)
Gondrezick had 23 points in overtime of an 80-78 double-overtime win against Buchanan. She finished with 27 field goals, including 10 3-pointers. The total set a Michigan state record. Gondrezick is the only girl to average 40 points in a season (40.5) in Michigan history. She had 851 points on the season and 2,827 for her career.

2015
64 — Whitney Creech, Jenkins (Ky.)
Creech had several outings greater than 64 points, but those occurred during her senior year of 2016. She made 24 field goals and 15 free throws in a 95-93 loss to Clintwood. Creech finished her career with 5,527 career points.

64 — Megan Gustafson, South Shore (Port Wing, Wis.)
Gustafson set the state record for points in one game, making 27 field goals and 10 free throws in a 73-37 win over Mercer. She went on to set a state record for points in a season with 1,127 and a career with 3,229.

2014
68 — Victoria Vivians, Scott Central (Forest, Miss.)
Vivians averaged 46 points per game in 2014 and finished her career with 5,745 points. In an 80-76 loss to Newton, Vivians had 22 field goals, including six 3-pointers, and 18 free throws.

73 — Tiara Tucker, Brookside Christian (Stockton, Calif.)
Tucker had 136 points in back-to-back games, including 73 in a 105-17 win over Millennium. She made 31 field goals, including four 3-pointers, and seven free throws.

2012
63 — Sydney Zambrotta, Upper Room Christian (Dix Hills, N.Y.)
Zambrotta set the Long Island record as an eighth grader in a 78-17 win over Our Savior New American. She later went on to play for Christ the King.

2011
63 — Jenzel Nash, Worthing (Houston)
In an 84-38 win over Washington, Nash made 26 field goals, four 3-pointers and seven free throws.

2010
61 — Kayla Linkous, Tri-Village (New Madison, Ohio)
Linkous had all 61 points in three quarters of a 95-32 win over Jefferson. She scored 45 in the first half and was 17-for-17 on free throws.

2009
58 — Laura Davidson, Greenwood (Ark.)
Davidson hit a half-court, 3-point buzzer-beater to send the game into overtime. She made 16 field goals, 10 3-pointers and 16 free throws. She totaled 30 points in the fourth quarter and overtime of an 84-83 win over Siloam Springs.

57 — Brittney Jefferson, Leggett (Texas)
One of the all-time leading scorers in Texas with 4,257 career points, Jefferson had 57 points in a 105-73 win over Apple Springs during her sophomore season, making 23 field goals, five 3-pointers and six free throws.

57 — Courtney Strain, Woodland (Ala.)
The all-time leading scorer in Alabama with 5,283 points, Strain had 20 field goals, three 3-pointers and 14 free throws in a 69-66 loss to Handley.

57 — Sarah Bailey, Mars Hill Bible (Florence, Ala.)
Bailey made 23 field goals in an 86-78 win over Campbell.

2007
65 — Mary Kathryn Govero, Mt. Salus Christian (Clinton, Miss.)
One of the all-time leading scorers in Mississippi, Govero made 23 field goals and 17 free throws in a 75-65 win over Benton Academy. She scored 28 points in the fourth quarter alone.

2006
113 — Epiphanny Prince, Bergtraum (New York City)
The last high school player, boy or girl, to score 100 points in a game, Prince made 54-of-60 field goals in a 137-32 win over Brandeis. She had 58 points by halftime and 33 points in the fourth quarter.

75 — Adrian McGowan, Goodrich (Texas)
The all-time leading scorer in Texas with 5,424 points had her high total in an 85-70 win over Shepherd.

2004
73 — Kassie Drew, Anna-Jonesboro (Anna, Ill.)
Drew finished her career as the No. 6 all-time leading scorer in Illinois with 3,197 points. She had 29 field goals, including a state-record 12 3-pointers, in a 124-39 win over Chester.

2003
71 — Charde Houston, San Diego
Houston, the state's all-time leading scorer when she graduated with 3,837 points, scored her total in a 123-38 win over Castle Park despite not playing the second quarter.

2002
67 — Charde Houston, San Diego
In a 116-38 win over Morse, Houston made 30 field goals, six 3-pointers and one free throw. She did not play in the fourth quarter.

67 — Jessica Roberson, Ingomar (New Albany, Miss.)
In a 100-31 win over Wheeler, Roberson set a state record with 14 3-pointers.

65 — Kayla Lambert, Brockton (Mont.)
Lambert made 27 field goals, nine 3-pointers and two free throws in an 85-57 win over Fairview.

63 — Jody Sizemore, Leslie County (Hyden, Ky.)
Sizemore made 24 field goals and 14 free throws in a 117-30 win over Buckhorn.

71 — LeAnne Bennett, Ribet Academy (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Bennett's total was the fourth-highest total in Southern Section history at the time. It came in an 81-23 win over First Lutheran (Sylmar).

71 — Jackie Stiles, Central Plains (Claflin, Kan.)
Stiles had 41 points in the first half and 21 points in the first quarter of a 107-38 win over Macksville. She went on to set the state career scoring record with 3,603 points and the NCAA career scoring record with 3,393 points.

68 — Angie Finkes, Kenton Ridge (Springfield, Ohio)
Finkes made 28 field goals and 12 free throws in a 109-76 win over Northwestern.

71 — Winnie Duffy, Wakefield (The Plains, Va.)
Duffy set the Virginia state record in a 77-75 win over Emmanuel Christian.

77 — Wanda Camps, Laguardia (New York City)
Needing 73 points to move into second place all-time on the New York City career scoring list, Camps scored 77 in an 87-43 win over Park West. She had 30 points in her next game to finish with a city record 2,458 points.

5-player: 62 — Nisha Craft, Osceola (Kissimmee, Fla.)
Craft set the Pinellas County scoring record in an 81-49 win over Pinellas Park.

6-player: 68 — Janell Grimm, Montezuma (Iowa)
In the final season of 6-player basketball in Iowa, Grimm had her high point total of the season in a 98-87 win over Iowa Valley. She averaged 51 points per game to lead the state.

5-player: 69 — Marlene Stollings, Eastern (Beaver, Ohio)
Stollings had 27 field goals, seven 3-pointers and eight free throws in a 92-58 win over Clay. Stollings is the all-time leading scorer in Ohio with 3,514 career points.

6-player: 79 — Janell Grimm, Deep River-Millersburg (Iowa)
Before Deep River-Millersburg closed and Grimm transferred to Montezuma, she had a 79-point game in a win over Eddyville.

5-player: 75 — Tresa Phillips, New Lima (New Lima, Okla.)
Phillips posted 30 field goals and 15 free throws in an 84-63 win over White Oak.

6-player: 79 — Kristi Kinne, Jefferson-Scranton (Jefferson, Iowa)
Kinne averaged 52 points per game her senior year and reportedly had 79 points in one game, although the opponent is not named in any accounts of her scoring total.

5-player: 101 — Lisa Leslie, Morningside (Inglewood, Calif.)
Leslie set the record for most points in a half as she scored 49 points in the first quarter and 52 in the second quarter of a 102-24 win over South Torrance. Leslie made 37 field goals and 27 free throws. The game ended at halftime when South Torrance did not come out for the second half.

6-player: 71 — Paryn Stanfield, BCLUW (Conrad, Iowa)
In a 101-87 win over Dike, Stanfield made 24 field goals and 23 free throws.

1989
5-player: 85 — Christy Cooper, Circleville (W.Va.)
West Virginia played girls basketball in the fall and Cooper holds the record for the highest scoring average for 5-on-5 players at 60. In a 107-68 win over Dunmore, Cooper made 32 field goals and 21 free throws.

6-player: 107 — Shannon Kite, Elk Horn-Kimballton (Elk Horn, Iowa)
Kite scored the fourth-highest total in state history in a 133-52 win over Shelby-Tennant. She had 51 field goals and five three throws. She had 57 points in the second half.

5-player: 76 — Rachel Saunders, Pineville (Ky.)
Saunders made 33 field goals and eight free throws in a 104-53 win over Marsh Fork. She had 45 points in the second half.

6-player: 73 — Shannon Kite, Elk Horn-Kimballton (Elk Horn, Iowa)
One year before scoring 107 points, Kite had the high-game for the year in a 110-73 win over Oakland in the sectional playoffs.

5-player: 69 — Sherri Johnson, Foster (Richmond, Texas)
Johnson connected on 31 field goals and seven free throws in an 85-47 win over North Mason.

6-player: 105 — Jan Jensen, Elk Horn-Kimballton (Elk Horn, Iowa)
Jensen missed 10 games during the season due to an ankle injury, but following her return she made 45 field goals and 15 free throws in a 132-63 win over Villisca. She averaged 65.7 points on the season.

5-player: 65 — Tracy Lis, Killingly (Conn.)
The all-time leading scorer in Connecticut with 3,681 points, Lis made 27 field goals and 11 free throws in a 91-67 win over Fitch.

6-player: 100 — Lynne Lorenzen, Ventura (Iowa)
The nation's all-time 6-on-6 scoring leader with 6,736 points, Lorenzen scored her career high in a 126-74 win over Woden-Crystal Lake. She had 67 points in the first half and made 43 field goals and 14 free throws.

1985
5-player: 76 — Lisa Cline, West Holmes (Millersburg, Ohio)
Cline set a state scoring record when she made 31 field goals and 14 free throws in a 121-24 win over Coventry.

6-player: 93 — Lynn Lorenzen, Ventura (Iowa)
Prior to her 100-point game in 1986, Lorenzen set a personal high with 41 field goals and 11 free throws in a 111-81 win over Goldfield.

5-player: 72 — Stacie Calhoun, Oakwood (Fithian, Ill.)
Calhoun scored 32 points in the first quarter en route to her season-high total in a 125-26 win over Potomac.

6-player: 75 — Shanda Berry, Oelwein (Iowa)
In a 103-89 win over West Central, Berry made 34 field goals and seven free throws.

5-player: 76 — Michelle Swantner, St. Clair (Pa.)
In a 122-44 win over Freeland, Swantner had 34 field goals and eight free throws.

6-player: 75 — Lisa Becker, Jefferson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)
Becker had the top point total two years in a row, including 75 points in a 115-72 win over Prairie in the sectional playoffs.

5-player: 105 — Cheryl Miller, Poly (Riverside, Calif.)
Miller set the 5-on-5 record with 46 field goals and 13 free throws in a 179-15 win over Norte Vista. She also had 26 rebounds and 11 assists.

6-player: 69 — Lisa Becker, Jefferson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)
Becker made 33 field goals and three free throws in a 74-67 win over Hempstead.

5-player: 100 — Linda "Hawkeye" Page, Dobbins Tech (Philadelphia)
Page became the first 5-on-5 player to score 100 points when she made 41 field goals and 18 free throws in a 131-38 win over Mastbaum.

Hambright paced a 93-53 sectional semifinal win over Lisbon.

One of the top scorers in Kentucky history, Grigsby made 36 field goals and nine free throws in a 135-28 win over Feds Creek.

6-player: 81 — Jill Rankin, Phillips (Texas)
Rankin scored her total in an 87-80 win over Malakoff.

5-player: 74 — Peggy Gay, Buckhorn (Ky.)
Gay scored her total in a 136-20 win over Oneida.

6-player: 92 — Glenda Poock, West Central (Maynard, Iowa)
Poock averaged 60 points per game, including the high total against Postville in a 129-75 win. She had 43 field goals and six free throws.

Haynes finished her career with 3,614 points.

6-player: 80 — Joyce Elder, A-D-M (Adel, Iowa)
Elder reportedly had 80 points in a game in 1974 and she was a first-team all-state player; however, no opponent is listed. Ann Dolan of North Linn would be the next high total with 75 points in a 103-58 win over Kennedy (Cedar Rapids).

5-player: 60 — Ann Ellis, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
Ellis reportedly broke her brother's school record of 51 points in a game with her effort in an 81-20 win over North Rowan.

Long hit 101 points for the second time in her career in a 115-76 win over Gilbert. She later added 100 points in a 143-45 win over Dows. Long averaged 51.4 points a game as a sophomore, 62.7 as a junior and 68.5 as a senior. She became the first female ever drafted by the NBA when she was taken in the 13th round by the Golden State Warriors. She had 6,250 career prep points.

Playing for one of the top programs in the nation, Brock made 40 field goals and 13 free throws in a 114-38 win over Cleveland.

Burks outscored Cabot's opponents on the season 591-551. She passed away of natural causes at the age of 96 on March 24, 2020.

Smith was the star player in the early days of the Monetta dynasty that won 154 straight games and eight straight state titles. Smith averaged 46 points per game and had high games of 86, 84, 81, 74 and 65 points.

100 — Dorothy " Dot" Bunn, Waresboro (Ga.)
Bunn, who had scored 66 points in a game earlier in the season, set the Georgia state record with 100 points in a 149-9 win over Woodbine/Kingsland. Teammate Milbrey Fales had 47 points as well.

96 — Thelma Overstreet, Bowie (Texas)
Overstreet scored her total in a 106-8 win over Nocona.

104 — Gladys Minney, Vida (Ore.)
Minney averaged 56 points per game in 1931 when she was a 16-year-old senior. She also averaged 46 points as a junior and 43 points as a sophomore. She had the 104 points against Santa Clara her senior year.

120 — Helen Fox, St. Scholastica Academy (Ark.)
Three players accounted for four 100-point games in Arkansas, all within a year's time. Quinnie Hamm scored 109 and 102 points for Sparkman in 1929 and Doris Anderson had 106 points for El Dorado on Feb. 14 of 1930. Fox was the last to score over 100, getting 120 on 60 field goals on March 20 in a 140-2 win over Fort Smith.
