The Roger Bacon Spartans will be taking part in a tournament against the Reading Blue Devils at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Roger Bacon has three straight wins, Reading has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Thursday, Roger Bacon got the win against Cincinnati Country Day by a conclusive 8-1. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by seven runs or more this season.
Kyle Miller was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Owen Stewart, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted over his last 12 contests. Another player making a difference was Terrance Todd, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
Roger Bacon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .379 or higher in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Reading didn't have quite enough to beat Colerain on Tuesday and fell 3-2.
Reading saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lincoln Lattire, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Reading's defeat dropped their record down to 7-19. As for Roger Bacon, their victory bumped their record up to 16-8.
Reading's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Roger Bacon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .348. It's a different story for Reading, though, as they've only averaged .238. Will they be able to contain Roger Bacon's hitters?
Roger Bacon got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in April against Reading by a conclusive 10-0 score. Do the Spartans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Blue Devils turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
