Marquez is a perfect 10-0 against Maywood Academy since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Gladiators will host the Eagles at 1:15 p.m. Marquez's hitters haven't had much luck over their past four contests, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Marquez fell victim to Maywood CES and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wolfpack. Considering the last time the Gladiators couldn't score was back in March, the team can't take the result too hard.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Maywood Academy). They never let Elizabeth get on the board and left with a 19-0 victory on Thursday. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by ten runs or more this season.
Jacob Herrera made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in five of his six plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Maywood Academy is 4-1 when Herrera posts two or more runs, but 0-7 otherwise.
In other batting news, Rudy Rodriguez was a standout: he got on base in all five of his plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of William Bamaca, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
Maywood Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .700. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Marquez's loss dropped their record down to 8-11. As for Maywood Academy, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-8.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Marquez has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .449. However, it's not like Maywood Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .480. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Marquez's way against Maywood Academy in their previous matchup back in March, as Marquez made off with a 15-3 victory. Do the Gladiators have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
