Basketball Recap: Aaron Smith's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Uwharrie Charter Academy over Providence Grove

If Uwharrie Charter Academy was feeling good fresh off their 71-42 takedown of Southwestern Randolph last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Uwharrie Charter Academy Eagles took a 63-50 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Providence Grove Patriots on Friday. The Eagles were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Patriots earlier this season, when they won 59-47.

Uwharrie Charter Academy's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Aaron Smith, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 14 boards. The dominant performance also gave Smith a new career-high in blocks (three). Another player making a difference was Jaxon Mabe, who posted seven points along with nine blocks and five rebounds.

Will Dabbs was his usual excellent self, going 11 of 19 on his way to 30 points and eight boards for Providence Grove. Dabbs has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrew Thomas, who scored 13 points and four steals.

Uwharrie Charter Academy has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 14-5 record this season. As for Providence Grove, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-8.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Uwharrie Charter Academy will face off against Wheatmore at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Providence Grove, they will challenge Southwestern Randolph at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Providence Grove is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.1 points per game this season.
