If the La Costa Canyon Mavericks were feeling good off their 66-37 takedown of the St. Joseph Academy Crusaders last Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. La Costa Canyon lost to Del Norte on the road by a decisive 65-49 margin on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, La Costa Canyon can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 140th, while Del Norte is ranked 23rd).
La Costa Canyon's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Natalie Pernot, who scored 16 points. Keira Colestock was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Bailey Barnhard had a dynamite game for Del Norte, scoring 38 points along with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. That makes it two consecutive games in which Barnhard has scored at least 25% of Del Norte's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Addison Cottle, who scored 3 points along with 9 rebounds and 4 steals.
La Costa Canyon's defeat dropped their record down to 2-1. As for Del Norte, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-0.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. La Costa Canyon will challenge Rancho Bernardo at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Rancho Bernardo's defense has only allowed 17.2 points per game this season, so La Costa Canyon's offense will have their work cut out for La Costa Canyon. As for Del Norte, they will head out on the road to face off against Mt. Carmel at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Mt. Carmel focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 40 on Wednesday.
