The Niwot Cougars will square off against the Broomfield Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Niwot has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the game with six straight defeats, while Broomfield will come in with seven straight victories.
Palisade hit Niwot with a six-run sixth inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Cougars fell just short of the Bulldogs by a score of 10-9.
Payton Johnson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Anna Halverson, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs.
Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Broomfield took on Frederick on Thursday. The Eagles were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Golden Eagles. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by seven runs or more this season.
Ireland Heer spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kiley Wheaton, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaitlyn Halliday, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Broomfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in October of 2024.
Broomfield's win bumped their record up to 14-2. As for Niwot, their loss dropped their record down to 6-12.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Niwot hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .349. However, it's not like Broomfield struggles in that department as they've averaged .347. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Niwot might still be hurting after the 15-0 defeat they got from Broomfield in their previous meeting back in October of 2024. Will the Cougars have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
