Calvin Christian saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tyler Hoff, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Hoff has become a key player for the Crusaders: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-4 otherwise.
Meanwhile, Escondido Charter waltzed into their game on Friday with seven straight wins... but they left with eight. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Patriots a 4-0 shutout. Give the Tigers' pitching crew some credit: that's the team's third straight shutout.
Liam McGinty was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over six innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Matthew Hydar and Sam Romero did most of the damage at the plate: Hydar went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI, while Romero went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Escondido Charter pushed their record up to 13-1 with the victory, which was their eighth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.1 runs over those games. As for Calvin Christian, they now have a losing record of 4-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Calvin Christian has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Escondido Charter struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Calvin Christian suffered a grim 22-0 defeat to Escondido Charter in their previous meeting on Wednesday. Can the Crusaders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
