The Laurel Highlands Mustangs's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their ninth straight loss. They took a 59-53 hit to the loss column at the hands of Southmoreland. While losing is never fun, Laurel Highlands can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 529th, while Southmoreland is ranked 111th).
Laurel Highlands lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Ethan Koffler, who scored 13 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Shane Layton, who scored 14 points.
Ty Keffer was his usual excellent self, scoring 20 points for Southmoreland. Keffer hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. Ty Whoric was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Laurel Highlands' defeat was their fourth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 2-12. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.5 points per game. As for Southmoreland, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Laurel Highlands will challenge Uniontown at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Uniontown will be coming into the contest with an undefeated record on the line. As for Southmoreland, they will head out on the road to take on Indiana at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Indiana is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.
