After a string of 11 wins, the Ventura Cougars's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They took a 53-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of Buena. Ventura was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January.
Despite the loss, Ventura still got an impressive performance from Skyler Knight, who scored 24 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. It was the first time this season that Knight posted two or more blocks. Another player making a difference was Kailee Staniland, who scored nine points along with seven assists and three steals.
Buena found their leader in underclassman Karisma Lewis, who scored 22 points along with five rebounds and four steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Lewis has scored at least a third of Buena's points. Skye Thomas was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with 14 rebounds.
Ventura's loss ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 23-4. As for Buena, their victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-5.
Ventura will take on the Yellowjackets at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Oxnard knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five contests -- so hopefully the Cougars like a good challenge. As for Buena, they will head out on the road to take on the Chargers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
