The Troy Trojans came tearing into Wednesday's match with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. In a tight matchup that could have gone either way, they made off with a 50-49 win over Williamson. That's another feather in the cap for Troy, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Troy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kailyn Sterling, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 19 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Katie Lackey, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Williamson lost, one person who can't be blamed is Taylor Rae Jones. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine rebounds. Jones hasn't dropped below three steals for seven straight games. Kenna Thomas was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with two steals and two blocks.
Troy pushed their record up to 14-3 with that win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.6 points per game. As for Williamson, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-3.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Troy will square off against the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Athens will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Pennsylvania Rankings (they are ranked 570th, while the Trojans are ranked 162nd). As for Williamson, they will head out on the road to challenge the Hornets at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
