Concord and Mt. Diablo are an even 5-5 against one another since September of 2016, but not for long. After each having a week off, the two teams will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Concord knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Mt. Diablo likes a good challenge.
Last Friday, Concord blew past Encinal, posting a 42-14 win. The Bears might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by 27 points or more this season.
It was another big night for Juan Gonzalez, who threw for 202 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 passes, and also punched in one score on the ground. Concord's leading receiver Erik Madayag was Gonzalez's top target yet again, picking up 104 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Concord was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 252 rushing yards. They are a perfect 3-0 when they've run for more than 200 yards.
Meanwhile, Mt. Diablo was not able to break out of their rough patch last Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 19-13 heartbreaker at the hands of McClymonds. While losing is never fun, the Red Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 486th, while the Warriors are ranked 120th).
Concord will need to focus on slowing down Antonio Campbell Iii, one of several Mt. Diablo players who made an impact when they last played. He rushed for 63 yards and one score. Jamonie Lewis also helped out with an impressive 105 receiving yards.
Concord has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 43.0 points over those games. As for Mt. Diablo, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-3.
Concord was taken down by Mt. Diablo 63-13 in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of the Red Devils' Michael Vasquez, who threw for 283 yards and one touchdown while completing 72.2% of his passes. Now that the Bears know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
