The San Marcos Royals will head out to challenge the Rio Mesa Spartans at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
San Marcos took a ten-run defeat the last time they faced off against Buena, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Royals narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Bulldogs 1-0. The win was some much needed relief for the Royals as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Mason Crang was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over seven innings pitched. Crang was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Rio Mesa). They blew past Oxnard 15-3 on Friday. The victory continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Yellowjackets: they've now won five in a row.
Like San Marcos, Rio Mesa also got a great game from a two-way player: Daniel Puebla. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. Puebla also tossed a walk, which is notable because Rio Mesa is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 1-4 otherwise. Puebla was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Those two hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Alec Fontyn was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Christian Macias was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Rio Mesa always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .574. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.
San Marcos' record is now 2-4. As for Rio Mesa, they picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 3-5.
San Marcos beat Rio Mesa 6-1 when the teams last played back in March of 2025. Will the Royals repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
