South Central easily dispatched Culver Community on Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. Despite their loss, South Central saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Clayten Strauch, who went 6 for 12 on his way to 15 points in addition to seven boards and four steals, was perhaps the best of all. Strauch has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jay Huerta, who posted 16 points and five rebounds.
Even though they lost, South Central smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Boone Grove hadn't done well against Morgan Township recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Boone Grove had just enough and edged Morgan Township out 58-56. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wolves have posted since February 13, 2024.
Boone Grove's win came from a few key players South Central will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Javy Carrera, who almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine boards. Mark Rowland was another key player, going 6 of 8 on his way to 15 points.
South Central now has a losing record at 5-6. As for Boone Grove, their win bumped their record up to 4-6.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: South Central has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 29.9 boards per game. However, it's not like Boone Grove struggles in that department as they've been averaging 24.3 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
South Central might still be hurting after the 55-32 defeat they got from Boone Grove in their previous matchup back in January of 2024. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Boone Grove's Jack Stevens, who went 8 of 18 on his way to 20 points and eight rebounds. Now that South Central knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
