Israel Nieto was his usual excellent self, rushing for 135 yards and three TDs on only 12 carries, while also throwing for 220 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.0 yards per attempt. Those 135 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. 156 of Nieto's passing yards were hauled in by Aaron Eliserio, who also brought in two receiving touchdowns.
Special teams also played a big role in the game for Chaparral, adding 18 points to the final score. All came from Nieto: he went 6-for-6 kicking field goals for 18 points.
Meanwhile, St. Pius X blew past Grants, posting a 48-7 victory. The Sartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by 20 points or more this season.
St. Pius X's win came from a few key players Chaparral will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Hershul Olloway Jr, who rushed for 147 yards and one score on only nine carries. Olloway Jr is crushing it when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for at least 102 every time he's taken the field this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaiah Carpenter, who threw for 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 72.7% of his passes.
St. Pius X didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Olloway Jr and Nicholas Casco, who each picked up one interception apiece.
Chaparral's record is now 8-3. As for St. Pius X, their record now sits at 9-1.
Saturday's game might be decided on the ground. Chaparral has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 180 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like St. Pius X struggles in that department as they've been averaging 233 rushing yards. There's a good chance Saturday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Chaparral was dealt a bruising 50-0 loss at the hands of St. Pius X when the teams last played back in October. Can the Lobos avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
