Video: Rachel Martindale sinks 80-foot buzzer-beaterNorth Allegheny (Wexford, Pa.) girls basketball coach Spencer Stefko said he's running out of superlatives when discussing freshman guard
Rachel Martindale.
He — and a packed crowd witnessing North Allegheny's 68-40 WPIAL Class AAAA semifinal win over Penn Hills Tuesday night — had no words for Martindale's 80-foot make to end the third quarter.
Everyone just stood and cheered. Most were stunned.
Judging from her teammates, however, Martindale's improbable make wasn't that surprising. One teammate raised her hands shortly after the ball left Martindale's hands.
"In practice, she's made them from out of bounds, the entire 84 feet," Stefko told
tribliv.com. "She's kind of carving out a little niche for herself. She's got more buzzer-beaters than you would imagine any freshman would have."
Martindale was the game's hero in a 44-41 quarterfinal win over Bethel Park last week. She had nine points in the fourth quarter of that game, including the go-ahead three-pointer.
North Allegheny goes after its first WPIAL title since 1998 when it plays unbeaten
Norwin (North Huntingdon, Pa.) (24-0) on Saturday.
