Mount Miguel suffered their biggest loss since November 22, 2023 on Friday. They had to suffer through a rough 77-29 loss at the hands of El Capitan. While losing is never fun, Mount Miguel can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1235th, while El Capitan is ranked 357th).
Despite the defeat, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: Jaylene Hughes scored 17 points. That was a full 58.6% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the 20th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Satari Jay, who scored eight points.
Mount Miguel struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as El Capitan racked up 21 assists.
Helix proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by 41) but on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past Granite Hills 46-43. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win Helix has posted since December 23, 2023.
Mount Miguel has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost ten of their last 11 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-18 record this season. As for Helix, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season.
Everything came up roses for Mount Miguel against Helix in their previous meeting back in February of 2023 as the squad secured a 74-43 victory. Will Mount Miguel repeat their success, or does Helix have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
