Minnesota River recap October 29, 2013
Watertown-Mayer extended the longest winning streak in Minnesota River this week by beating Rockford, 35-14. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.
Norwood-Young America scaled the state rankings by moving to 171 from 233 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Raiders climbed the ranks as a result of besting Zumbrota-Mazeppa 36-35.
Mayer Lutheran's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Cole Buttenhoff threw for 133 and 2 touchdowns and Anthony Gruenhagen had 60 yards receiving. On the ground Joel Burfeind chipped in 160 yards. Burfeind helped Mayer Lutheran's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 51 yards.
Burfeind provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Crusaders fell to Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity. Burfeind's key target this week was Gruenhagen, who caught 4 passes for 60 yards.
Burfeind was the best running back in the league this week. In 23 carries, he ran for 160 yards as Mayer Lutheran lost to the Bulldogs. Buttenhoff also contributed to the rushing game with 24 yards on the ground.
Mayer Lutheran's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Crusaders feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Buttenhoff has thrown for 1,279 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, while Gruenhagen has 44 catches for 716 yards.
Norwood-Young America made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 8,597 from 11,548. The improvement was the result of a 36-35 victory over the Cougars last week.
