Basketball Recap: Pace Comes Up Short

Pace was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 47-41 heartbreaker at the hands of the Weslaco East Wildcats. The Vikings were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Wildcats earlier this season, when they won 33-27.

When it comes to explaining why Pace lost, don't look at Bre Nelson. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 boards. The dominant performance also gave Nelson a new career-high in steals (eight). Another player making a difference was Kayla Cavazos, who posted a point and seven steals.

Even though they lost, Pace smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive matchups.

Leading Weslaco East to victory were Angel Nwanne and Lex Ybarra. Nwanne went 11 of 24 on her way to 25 points, while Ybarra dropped a double-double on 12 points and 15 rebounds. Ybarra is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last four games she's played.

Pace's loss dropped their record down to 9-15. As for Weslaco East, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a massive bump to their 5-17 record this season.

Pace will welcome Harlingen South at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Harlingen South will roll in looking for their 12th straight victory, something Pace surely won't give up without a fight. As for Weslaco East, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Weslaco East Wildcats duke it out with the Mercedes Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Mercedes has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
