The La Vernia Bears put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They secured a 65-59 W over Young Men's Leadership Academy. Given La Vernia's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 265th, while Young Men's Leadership Academy is ranked 1043rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
La Vernia got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Kel Cardenas out in front who scored nine points along with four steals. Cardenas has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Cole Whatley was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with five rebounds.
Despite the defeat, Young Men's Leadership Academy saw an underclassman step up: Isaiah Rivera scored 24 points along with two steals. Rivera continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Tavion Steen, who scored 12 points along with two steals.
La Vernia pushed their record up to 23-0 with that win, which was their sixth straight on the road. As for Young Men's Leadership Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-13.
La Vernia will be playing at home against John F. Kennedy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully John F. Kennedy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Tuesday. As for Young Men's Leadership Academy, they will head out on the road to square off against Gonzales at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gonzales is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak.
