San Marcos is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Friday. They will square off against the La Costa Canyon Mavericks at 7:15 p.m. One thing working in San Marcos' favor is that they have posted at least 31 points in their last five matchups.
San Marcos is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They blew past Oceanside 52-27 on Friday. The Knights pushed the score to 42-21 by the end of the third, a deficit the Pirates had little chance of recovering from.

Zamar Reese continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 236 yards and three TDs while picking up 13.1 yards per carry. Those 236 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Ty Sagaser was in the mix as well, providing San Marcos with two scores.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: San Marcos was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 293 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, La Costa Canyon faced Mission Hills in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Mavericks and the Grizzlies were almost perfectly matched up, but the Mavericks suffered a 35-34 loss. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last six times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Defeat or not, La Costa Canyon got some senior leadership from Coby Herman and Quinn Roth. Herman gained 271 total yards, while Roth threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns while completing 72.7% of his passes.
San Marcos pushed their record up to 5-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 43.0 points over those games. As for La Costa Canyon, their loss was their first of the season and also makes their record 5-1.
Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Reese and Herman. Reese just won't slow down this season and has run in 12 touchdowns while averaging 148.5 rushing yards per game. Herman has been a dominant force too and has averaged 132.5 rushing yards per game.
San Marcos might still be hurting after the 30-7 defeat they got from La Costa Canyon in their previous meeting back in September of 2022. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Knights were down 30-7.
