The El Cerrito Gauchos will head out to square off against the Bishop O'Dowd Dragons at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. El Cerrito is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
While El Cerrito didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-11), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Santa Rosa on Monday as El Cerrito made off with an 11-1 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Gauchos.
El Cerrito got a massive performance out of Jaxon Coles, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four RBI, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those doubles marked the first that Coles hit this season. Another player making a difference was Kamal Bhatt, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3.
El Cerrito always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .606. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Bishop O'Dowd came up short against Rodriguez on Saturday and fell 11-7. The Dragons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Bishop O'Dowd also got a good showing from Benjie Sharman, who didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave Sharman a new career-low in earned runs (zero).
At the plate, Rashad Hayes led a balanced group of hitters, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in hits. Evan Garrison was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
El Cerrito pushed their record up to 4-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Bishop O'Dowd, they now have a losing record of 1-2.
Bishop O'Dowd's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: El Cerrito has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .458. It's a different story for Bishop O'Dowd, though, as they've only averaged .357. Will they be able to contain El Cerrito's hitters?
El Cerrito took their win against Bishop O'Dowd in their previous meeting back in March of 2016 by a conclusive 7-1. Does El Cerrito have another victory up their sleeve, or will Bishop O'Dowd turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
