The Screven County Gamecocks had to start their season on the road on Tuesday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They were beaten by Burke County 79-45. Screven County has not had much luck with Burke County recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Screven County's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Demarko Ward, who scored 10 points. Another player making a difference was Lavez Roper, who scored 10 points.
Screven County struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Burke County racked up 17.
Burke County can attribute much of their success to Bryce Wimberly, who scored 17 points along with 6 rebounds. Kelly Williams was another key contributor, scoring 10 points.
Screven County's defeat dropped their record down to 0-1. As for Burke County, their win bumped their record up to 1-0.
Screven County will be playing in front of their home fans against Emanuel County Institute at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Burke County, they will head out on the road to face off against Stockbridge at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Stockbridge will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Georgia Rankings (they are ranked 458th, while Burke County is ranked 140th).
