Eureka and Illinois Valley Central are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Hornets will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against the Grey Ghosts at 4:30 p.m. Eureka is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
Washington hit Eureka with a seven-run seventh inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Hornets lost 12-3 to the Panthers. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Hornets have suffered since March 31, 2025.
Eureka saw nine different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Landon Wurmnest, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Adam Blunier also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Illinois Valley Central). They came out on top against Tolono Unity by a score of 8-4 on Saturday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Grey Ghosts as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Gabe Perez made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. He has become a key player for Illinois Valley Central: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 1-2 otherwise. Perez was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2025.
In other batting news, Keegan Schol was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2025. Another player making a difference was Sam Baas, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
Eureka's loss dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Illinois Valley Central, the win also got them back to even at 3-3.
Eureka beat Illinois Valley Central 3-0 when the teams last played back in May of 2025. Will the Hornets repeat their success, or do the Grey Ghosts have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
