The Chavez Eagles's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their sixth straight loss. They took a 55-45 hit to the loss column at the hands of Downtown Magnets. While losing is never fun, Chavez can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1327th, while Downtown Magnets is ranked 380th).
Downtown Magnets got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Brayane Kuaka Luyeye out in front who scored nine points along with 20 rebounds and four blocks. Those 20 rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Jason Martinez, who scored ten points along with five steals.
Chavez's loss was their fourth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 2-8. As for Downtown Magnets, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 8-1.
Chavez will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Verdugo Hills at 7:00 p.m. on January 12, 2024. Downtown Magnets is on the road again on Saturday and play against Arleta at 2:45 p.m. on December 16th.
