Trinity Presbyterian has won six straight games at home (dating back to last season), while Montgomery Academy has won six straight on the road also dating back to last season, but those streaks won't matter much on Friday. The Wildcats will welcome the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Trinity Presbyterian will bounce into Friday's matchup after beating Saint James, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Wildcats snuck past the Trojans with a 34-28 win on Friday.
Tillman Clements was his usual excellent self, rushing for 229 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 12.1 yards per carry, and also picking up 42 receiving yards and one score. He was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 66 yards. Another player making a difference was Land Sharpless, who threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns on only 19 passes.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Trinity Presbyterian was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 227 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 161 rushing yards in four consecutive contests.
Trinity Presbyterian's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Wilson Cherry, William Hughes, and Brazier Carpenter, who each picked up one sack apiece. Cherry was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making 17 total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, Montgomery Academy might've scored the first points on Friday, but it was Luverne who claimed the real prize. The Eagles fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 48-45. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for the Eagles, who until this game were averaging 13.33 points allowed.
The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Reid McBride and Kane Smith. Smith had a solid game and threw for 102 yards and a pair of TDs on only six passes. Meanwhile, McBride was balling out in the loss, throwing for 244 yards and two touchdowns while completing 78.9% of his passes.
Trinity Presbyterian's victory bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Montgomery Academy, their defeat was their first of the season and also makes their record 5-1.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Trinity Presbyterian has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 193.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Montgomery Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 168 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
