Video: Top 5 Plays of the Week
See the best from the diamond now that spring sports are in season.
Long winning streaks took a beating in the opening of the 2018 season. Shawnee (Okla.), the 2017 National Champions, saw its 52-game win streak come to an end on opening day. Likewise, Roosevelt (Sioux Falls, S.D.), saw its 33-game win streak end in its opener.
Then there was Indianapolis Cathedral (Ind.) and La Cueva (Albuquerque, N.M.), both of whom saw 28-game win streaks end on opening day.
Puyallup (Wash.) managed to avoid the opening-day jinx and up its win streak to 40 in a row before falling last week.
That leaves just Calvary Christian (Clearwater, Fla.) as the only team in the nation with a win streak of more than 26 games. The Warriors went 30-0 last year and are 24-0 this year for 54 straight wins. They are one of 10 teams in the nation with win streaks of 20 or more wins.
The all-time national record for is 89, set by Portsmouth (N.H.) between 2008 and 2012. According to the National Federation of High Schools record book, 13 teams have won over 60 games in a row. Calvary Christian could join that list by season's end.

Calvary Christian (Clearwater, Fla.) — 54The Warriors concluded the 2017 season with a 30-0 record. They've also won their first 24 games of the 2018 season, including recent wins over traditional Florida powerhouses Venice and Jesuit (Tampa Bay). The Warriors conclude the regular season on Friday against St. Petersburg and will begin the defense of their Class 4A state title. The Warriors could conclude the season with another 30-0 season and 60 straight wins. No Florida team has won more than 60 games in a row, according to the National Federation of High Schools record book.
Waconia (Minn.) — 26The Wildcats have won 26 in a row — all of them in 2017. Poor weather conditions have resulted in six straight postponements and no games played in 2018. Waconia went 26-0 in 2017 with a Class AAA state championship.
Argyle (Texas) — 26Lake Travis (Austin) began the season with 25 straight wins (before suffering its first loss) for the longest streak in the state this year — until Argyle defeated Decatur on Tuesday for win No. 26 in a row. Of their last 17 wins, 13 have been by the 10-run rule.
Gilbert Christian (Gilbert, Ariz.) — 26The Knights concluded the 2017 season with five straight wins, but they did not advance to the postseason. They've started the 2018 season 21-0 to put them in a tie for the second-longest win streak in the nation.
Cleburne (Texas) — 25The No. 1-ranked Class 5A team in Texas, Cleburne got off to a relatively slow start in 2018, posting a 3-1-2 record after six games. Since then, the Yellowjackets have won 25 in a row. Along the way, Cleburne beat Fort Worth North Side 34-3 and hit a state record 13 doubles.
Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) — 24The Eagles overcame the biggest threats to their win streak with two late-inning wins over IMG Academy (Bradenton). Montverde Academy rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win over the Ascenders last week and then scored a run in the top of the eighth to beat IMG Academy 1-0 on Tuesday. Montverde Academy does not play in the postseason in Florida and can wrap up an unbeaten season Thursday against Seven Rivers Christian.
Ringgold (Ga.) — 20The Tigers had a two-week stretch in early March when they went 2-3. Since then they've won 20 in a row for the longest active win streak in Georgia.
La Cueva (Albuquerque, N.M.) — 20If not for two losses to open the 2018 season, the Bears would be closing in on 50 wins in a row. They lost their first game in 2017 and then won 28 in a row to claim the Class 6A state championship. Since losing their two games to start 2018, the Bears have won 20 in a row. La Cueva holds the fourth longest win streak of all time, winning 70 in a row between 2002 and 2005.
Breaux Bridge (La.) — 20The Tigers opened the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs with a 10-0 win over Carver Collegiate Academy. That shutout was the seventh in a row for Breaux Bridge, which has 17 shutouts on the season.
Colleyville Heritage (Colleyville, Texas) — 20The Panthers were 4-3 in early March, but they have not lost since in climbing to a No. 2 ranking in Class 5A behind Cleburne.
