Aldine is 0-10 against Spring since December of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Aldine Mustangs will be home for the holidays to greet the Spring Lions at 5:30 p.m. Aldine is out to stop a five-game streak of losses at home.
On Tuesday, Aldine was the victim of a tough 66-41 loss at the hands of Westfield. Aldine has struggled against Westfield recently, as their match on Tuesday was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.
Despite their defeat, Aldine saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Aniyah Bevly, who scored 11 points, was perhaps the best of all. Bevly scored a full 26.8% of Aldine's points, the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Porsha Daniels, who scored 13 points along with nine rebounds.
Meanwhile, Spring entered their tilt with Dekaney with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Spring claimed a resounding 60-29 victory over Dekaney on the road. Given Spring's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 231st, while Dekaney is ranked 1260th), the result on Tuesday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Spring got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Za'Kenya Thompson out in front who scored 28 points. The match was Thompson's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Mariah Goodjoint was another key contributor, scoring 17 points.
Aldine has not been sharp recently, as they've lost 12 of their last 13 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-17 record this season. As for Spring, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Aldine have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 22.4 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Spring struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 16.6 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Aldine might still be hurting after the 60-39 loss they got from Spring in their previous meeting back in January. Thankfully for Aldine, Rikeyah Gant (who scored 33 points along with nine rebounds and seven steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
