A clash with a coach resulted in the arrest last week of one of the top high school baseball players in the county.
Tyler Shreve, a senior shortstop at Redlands East Valley (Redlands, Calif.), was given a citation for assault by sheriff’s deputies, according to the San Bernardino Sun, after a dispute with his coach turned physical.
“He and the coach had an argument,” Arden Wilshire, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, told the Sun. “He became upset when he was dismissed from the team.”
Shreve was cited and released and was not jailed for the misdemeanor charge. He provided a statement to the press, indicating that the altercation with head coach James Cordes occurred after Shreve had been removed from the team. Neither Shreve, nor school officials, commented on why Shreve had been dismissed from the Redlands East Valley baseball team.
"As a result, I became very frustrated and engaged in a verbal and somewhat physical altercation with the head varsity baseball coach," Shreve’s statement to the press read. "I realize my actions were wrong, and I sincerely apologize. This was an isolated incident. I have never been in any trouble like this previously, and I'm committed to making sure that I never repeat this behavior."
Last year Shreve batted .405 for Redlands East Valley with 16 RBI and seven doubles at the plate, and went 2-0 on the mound. The Wildcats were 23-7 overall and second to Yucaipa in the Citrus Belt League.
Shreve was one of the top quarterbacks in California in the fall, completing 133 of 216 passes for 1,931 yards and 22 touchdowns while leading the Wildcats to an 11-1 record and a Citrus Belt League championship.
Shreve signed a letter of intent to play football at the University of Utah next season. According to the Sun, a spokesman for the university said that coach Kyle Whittingham has not made a decision on what effect the arrest will have on Shreve’s scholarship.
