Springfield found themselves the reluctant recipients of an unpleasant 15-43 punch to the gut against New Ulm Cathedral on Wednesday. The state rankings had actually given Springfield a slight edge heading into the game, making this hurt that much more.
Junior Decker Scheffler and sophomore Kadin Johnson were two go-getters for Springfield despite the loss. The former picked up 52 yards on the ground and accumulated 93 passing yards, while the latter rushed for 67 yards and 1 touchdown. If you haven't heard Scheffler's name lately, then you haven't been paying much attention: he has loomed large in their past four games. Additional support came from defensive powerhouse junior Ivan Hovland, who racked up 17 tackles.
Both teams will be heading out of the conference in their next games. Springfield will stay at home on Tuesday against Sleepy Eye at 3:00 PM. If the contest is anything like the 45-42 finish from the last time they met, the scorekeeper will be kept real busy. As for New Ulm Cathedral, they will face off against Wabasso. Both of those teams worked hard to overcome the odds in their previous battles and are not about to give an easy one away.
