Video: Was it a hit or an error?Sonoma Academy achieved its fifth straight no-hitter, but it wasn't without controversy. There were no controversial scoring plays this time, as
Sonoma Academy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) recorded its sixth straight no-hitter in a 9-1 win over Tomales on Tuesday.
Sonoma Academy had four pitchers take the mound with
Kyle Duchynski getting the start and the win. He allowed a run in the first inning (without giving up a hit) and struck out four in his stint on the mound.
Dylan De La Montanya extended his no-hit inning streak to 21 innings in a row. He struck out six in two innings. The state record for consecutive no-hit innings is 24.1 by Steven Perry of Maxwell.
Sonoma Academy did not commit an error in the game and it was an error that was
a point of contention in their fifth no-hitter, a 3-0 win over Rincon Valley Christian. A misplayed high bouncer to the Sonoma Academy third baseman in the sixth inning was ruled an error, keeping the no-hit streak alive.
Sonoma Academy coach Dave Cox felt that the play was an error, and Rincon Valley Christian coach Todd Silvashy noted that the home team keeps the official book and thus makes the official call.
"It's their field and they are on a streak," he told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
With the sixth no-hitter now in the books, Sonoma Academy faces a team on Friday that has had some no-hit success of its own. St. Vincent de Paul (Petaluma, Calif.) put together four straight no-hitters at the exact same time Sonoma Academy began its streak. St. Vincent de Paul defeated Technology, Archbishop Hanna, Upper Lake and and Calistoga on no-hitters before giving up three hits to Tomales on April 22.
Like Sonoma Academy, St. Vincent de Paul (12-4) has five no-hitters on the season, adding another against Lower Lake in mid-March. The Mustangs are coming off a 6-5 loss to Fort Bragg last week. Sonoma Academy, which was scheduled to face Upper Lake on Friday, had its game postponed due to rain.
