After a string of five wins, the Murrieta Valley Nighthawks's good fortune finally ran out on Wednesday. They fell just short of Murrieta Mesa by a score of 37-35. Murrieta Valley was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Murrieta Mesa apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played on January 5th.
Murrieta Valley's loss came despite strong showings from Haley Farrell and Yulissa Cusworth. Farrell scored eight points, while Cusworth scored six points along with two steals. Cusworth has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played.
Murrieta Mesa found their leader in underclassman LaKaila Trimble, who dropped a triple-double on 21 points, 17 rebounds, and ten blocks. Trimble hasn't dropped below two blocks for 13 straight games. Another player making a difference was Aniah Green, who scored eight points.
Murrieta Valley's loss dropped their record down to 16-8. As for Murrieta Mesa, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-16.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Murrieta Valley will face off against Vista Murrieta at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Vista Murrieta knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three contests -- so hopefully Murrieta Valley likes a good challenge. As for Murrieta Mesa, they will head out on the road to face off against Temecula Valley at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Temecula Valley is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.
