Video: High school football player kicks pass into teammate's hands for interceptionLinebacker Hank Makerney gives a huge assist to teammate Izaiha Starling for the 'kick pick.'When linebacker
Hank Makerney saw the pass going low, he had to think on his feet. Well, more accurately, he thought WITH his feet.
The
Kaufman (Texas) senior knew he had no chance to intercept the
Gainesville (Texas) quarterback's pass, so he did the next best thing. He stuck out his left foot and kicked the ball into the air, giving teammate
Izaiha Starling just enough time to get under it and haul in the interception.
It's kind of like when you stand up and forget that your phone is on your lap. As you see it falling to the ground you give a desperation flail of the foot to try to kick it up to yourself. Usually you whiff or end up kicking the phone 20 yards in front of you, but there was that one time that it actually worked.
That must be the feeling Makerney had when he saw Starling corral the football to complete the "kick pick."
Kaufman went on to defeat Gainesville, 48-14, in its season opener. The Lions will play Fairfield in their home opener on Friday night.
