The Fontana Steelers had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19.9 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Santa Fe 31-28. Given Fontana's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 284th, while Santa Fe is ranked 710th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Despite the defeat, Santa Fe had strong showings from Lucy Gonzalez, who scored nine points, and Samantha Leon, who scored five points along with eight rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gonzalez has scored all season.
Fontana's victory bumped their record up to 16-2. As for Santa Fe, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-7 record this season.
Fontana will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Ramona Convent at 7:30 p.m. on December 29th. Ramona Convent's defense has only allowed 27.7 points per game this season, so Fontana's offense will have their work cut out for Fontana. Santa Fe and Bishop Conaty-Loretto will face off at 4:30 p.m. on December 29th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
