South Caldwell is on a four-game streak of home losses, Alexander Central a three-game streak of away losses, but someone's luck is about to change. The South Caldwell Spartans will take on the Alexander Central Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. South Caldwell will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 211th, while Alexander Central is ranked 35th).
On Tuesday, South Caldwell was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 52-48 to Freedom. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for South Caldwell in their matchups with Freedom: they've now lost five in a row.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Lillie Bumgarner, who scored 16 points. Another player making a difference was Kennedy Setzer, who scored 13 points.
Meanwhile, Alexander Central made easy work of Watauga on Tuesday and carried off a 64-43 victory.
Alexander Central found their leader in underclassman Meredith Wike, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Hallie Jarrett, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.
South Caldwell has been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 12 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-12 record this season. As for Alexander Central, their victory bumped their record up to 17-4.
South Caldwell lost to Alexander Central at home by a decisive 46-28 margin in their previous meeting back in January. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Wike, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine rebounds. Now that South Caldwell knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
