After three games on the road, Fairfield is heading back home. They will take on the Wood Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Fairfield posted their biggest victory since December 4, 2023 on Friday. They claimed a resounding 52-21 win over Armijo on the road. Given Fairfield's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 488th, while Armijo is ranked 1228th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
ZaRaya Porter was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 14 points and 19 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Ariana Hebert, who scored five points along with eight steals and six assists.
Meanwhile, Wood was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past Vacaville 62-34 at home. With that win, Wood brought their scoring average up to 50.3 points per game.
Wood got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Natalia Sanchez out in front who scored 19 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. Sanchez hasn't dropped below two steals for four straight games. Sa?nyah Stewart was another key contributor, scoring 21 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Fairfield is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season. As for Wood, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-10.
Wednesday's contest is shaping up to be a scrappy contest: Fairfield have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 30.4 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Wood, though, as they've been averaging only 32.7 rebounds per game. Given Fairfield's sizeable advantage in that area, Wood will need to find a way to close that gap.
Fairfield suffered a grim 56-35 defeat to Wood in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. Thankfully for Fairfield, Athena Brombacher (who almost dropped a triple-double on 14 points, 12 rebounds, and nine steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
