After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Americas, the Coronado Thunderbirds were happy to have found some success on Friday. They snuck past Socorro with a 46-42 win. This was payback for Coronado, who suffered a 61-60 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Coronado found their leader in underclassman Roberto Lopez, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Urquidi, who scored eight points.
Socorro's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sebastian Allen, who scored 15 points along with two steals. Kris Fang was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Coronado's victory bumped their record up to 9-18. As for Socorro, their defeat was their ninth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 9-14.
Coronado will take on the Rams at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Montwood presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Thunderbirds in Texas (the Rams are ranked 365th, while the Thunderbirds are ranked 817th). As for Socorro, they will head out on the road to take on the Trail Blazers at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Americas focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight last Tuesday.
