Wichita County extended their winning streak to four on Friday, bumping them up to 6-2. They blew past the Ellis Railroaders, posting a 56-6 win. The Indians' offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.
It was another big night for Cashton Young, who rushed for 116 yards and one score on only six carries, and also threw for 74 yards and one touchdown on only five passes. His longest rush was for an impressive 55 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Dylan Luna was another key player, rushing for 74 yards and one TD.
Wichita County's run defense was locked in: Ellis could only muster 3.5 yards per carry. While four picked up at least two total tackles, Young stood above the rest. He rushed for 116 yards and one score on only six carries, and also threw for 74 yards and one touchdown on only five passes. Wichita County didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 16.6.
Wichita County's defense didn't let Baylor Born, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Beau Porter and Ernesto Zermeno, who racked up all four sacks between them. Zermeno is on a roll when it comes to sacks, as he's now posted at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
As for Ellis, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas football rankings (they are ranked 41st, while Wichita County is ranked sixth).
When it comes to explaining why Ellis lost, don't look at Carson Schartz. Despite the final result, he rushed for 84 yards and one TD on only ten carries.
Coming up, Wichita County will face off against Rawlins County at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Indians' defense better be ready for this one: the Buffaloes have averaged an impressive 40 points per game this season. Ellis does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
