La Jolla will head into Saturday's match having proved themselves against Bonita Vista: La Jolla barely beat Bonita Vista the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Everything went La Jolla's way against Bonita Vista on Saturday as La Jolla made off with a 63-41 victory. The Vikings have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four contests by 22 points or more this season.
Reagan Bennett was her usual excellent self, going 12 of 24 on her way to 34 points in addition to six boards and three steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of La Jolla's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Soila Chadwick, who posted seven points and 18 rebounds.
La Jolla smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in six consecutive games.
Meanwhile, University City came up short against Grossmont on Saturday and fell 62-52. While losing is never fun, the Centurions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 620th, while the Foothillers are ranked 65th).
La Jolla will need focus on slowing down Kami Demara, one of several University City players who made an impact when they last played. She went 7 of 15 on her way to 15 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Topanga Tusantoso, who went 7 of 11 on her way to 15 points and three steals.
La Jolla is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.8 points per game. As for University City, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: La Jolla has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 34.9 rebounds per game. However, it's not like University City struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.8 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
La Jolla came up short against University City in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, falling 45-39. Can La Jolla avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
