It'll be a Battle of the Birds when Baptist Prep Eagles take on McGehee Owls at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Baptist Prep has given up an average of 7 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Baptist Prep is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Conway Christian just ended the team's seven-game winning streak on Tuesday. They lost 22-11 to Conway Christian. The loss put an end to Baptist Prep's undefeated start to the season.
Nick Boyette made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Nolan Boyette, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Nick wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Baptist Prep kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, McGehee came up short against DeWitt on Tuesday and fell 10-7. The loss continues a trend for the Owls in their meetings with the Dragons: they've now lost three in a row.
Kamryn Jefferson was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Jefferson was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances.
Jefferson wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Ashton Snow, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Having lost for the first time this season, Baptist Prep fell to 7-1. As for McGehee, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
Thursday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Baptist Prep has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .517. However, it's not like McGehee struggles in that department as they've averaged .490. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
