This season hasn't been kind to the Maricopa Indians, who are still winless after their eighth contest. They fell 15-7 to Shandon on Tuesday. Maricopa found out winning isn't easy when your three-point shooting is a whole 36% worse than the opposition.
Several Indians players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Verlina Roque, who scored three points along with nine steals and eight rebounds. That's the first time this season that Roque pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Quilliams, who scored a point along with 18 rebounds and three steals.
Shandon found their leader in underclassman Danna Zamora, who scored eight points.
Maricopa's loss was their eighth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 0-8. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 14.0 points per game. As for Shandon, their victory bumped their record up to 2-5.
Maricopa won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Coast Union at 3:30 p.m. on January 17th. Coast Union comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 18 points in their last six games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. Shandon's road trip will continue as they head out to face Valley Christian Academy at 5:00 p.m. on January 19th. Hopefully Valley Christian Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Tuesday.
