Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2021 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Oliver Orvis of
Essex (Essex Junction) is the 2021 MaxPreps Vermont High School Football Player of the Year. The 5-foot-9, 205-pound senior running back was a workhorse in leading the Hornets to the Division I state championship.
In 11 games for Essex (8-3) this season, Orvis piled up 1,385 yards and 10 touchdowns. After a 3-3 start, the team captain sparked a five-game win streak to close out the season en route to the title.
Orvis stepped up his game in the postseason. In a snowy Division I championship game win over Champlain Valley Union, Orvis carried 26 times for 138 yards and a score. He was even better in a semifinal triumph over Rutland, once again carrying 26 times but churning out 229 yards and a touchdown.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in early January.
