Pyramid Lake is 1-9 against Mineral County since April of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Lakers will head out to challenge the Serpents at 12:00 p.m. Mineral County took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Pyramid Lake, who comes in off a win.
Pyramid Lake barely beat Carlin the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Lakers blew past the Railroaders 17-2 on Friday. That 15 run margin sets a new team best for the Lakers this season.
John Kelly made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Pyramid Lake is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-5 otherwise. Kelly was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Pyramid Lake got a big performance out of Floyd Shaw, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Joshua Shaw also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Pyramid Lake always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .694. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Mineral County was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They fell 8-3 to Wells.
Chase Reeves spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and six unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up eight Ks.
At the plate, Mineral County saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Johnny Serrato, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
The win made it two in a row for Pyramid Lake and bumps their season record up to 4-6. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 8 runs in those games. As for Mineral County, they now have a losing record of 5-6.
Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Pyramid Lake has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .458. However, it's not like Mineral County struggles in that department as they've averaged .547. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Pyramid Lake suffered a grim 20-5 defeat to Mineral County in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Lakers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
