The KIPP King Lions will head out on the road to face off against the Leadership Public Schools Richmond Pumas at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. KIPP King is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 13 runs per game this season.
KIPP King barely beat Leadership the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Lions were the clear victors by a 27-8 margin over Leadership on Wednesday. The Lions have beaten Leadership the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest Leadership has come to flipping the script.
Gabriel Martinez was a standout: he scored two runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-3. Manuel Sandoval Jr. also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
KIPP King was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .656. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in five consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Leadership Public Schools Richmond entered their tilt with Aspire Richmond Ca. College Preparatory Academy on Tuesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They had just enough and edged out the Grizzlies 8-6.
Rene Lopez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 14 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than ten strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing three bases while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Landon Grisby, who scored two runs and stole five bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Brayan Bustos, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Leadership Public Schools Richmond pushed their record up to 4-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for KIPP King, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
Leadership Public Schools Richmond's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: KIPP King hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .429. It's a different story for Leadership Public Schools Richmond, though, as they've only averaged .195. Will they be able to contain KIPP King's hitters?
